Can you legally get married in Bahamas?
Couples must be in the Bahamas for at least 24 hours before they can apply for a license at the office of the Registrar General in Nassau. An exception applies to guests arriving by cruise ship – in this case you’ll need a letter from the ship’s carrier/guest services confirming that you have been in Bahamian waters for 24 hours. Two witnesses who are at least 18 years old must sign your marriage certificate, and witnesses can be provided if needed. You’ll receive your marriage license the day after you apply and it’s valid for 90 days.
Required documents:
- Couples wishing to marry in the Bahamas must present a photo ID issued by the government of their country of residence (for example, a valid passport).
- You’ll need proof of the date of your arrival in the Bahamas. Use your Bahamas Immigration Card or the entry stamp in your passport as proof of your arrival date.
- If you’re single and have never been married, you’ll need a declaration verifying this fact. This declaration can be notarized before a notary public or other person authorized to administer oaths in your country of residence. You’ll need this document when you apply for a marriage license. If you prefer, you may also make this declaration in the Bahamas with an attorney or notary public.
- If you’re a minor (under the age of 18), you must have written consent from your parents to marry in the Bahamas. Consent forms are available at the registrar’s office.
- If you’re divorced, you must present an original final divorce decree or a certified copy with a raised or colored seal.
- If you’re widowed, you must provide a death certificate of the deceased spouse.
